I'm a sucker for horror movies where the plot is the search for snuff or some dastardly sick horror movie that nobody has ever seen.

But after seeing the trailer for The Hills Run Red, we may get another course in this subgenre of horror. There has been a reemergence in vintage, slasher flicks with Laid to Rest being the best of the bunch. But this flick follows the tried and true formula of hiking teenagers, gratuitous nudity, an unkillable masked slasher and tons of gore and splatter. The buzz and hype for The Hills Run Red has been maxed out with appearances by Dave Parker and Sophie Monk (who goes full frontal in THRR) at SDCC.

The hype has been shockingly positive.

Here be the plot:

The story centers on a film fanatic whose obsession with finding a complete print of an infamous slasher movie leads him and two friends into the backwoods where the film was shot. They realize too late that filming never ended -- and now they must survive a nightmarish onslaught or become part of the movie forever.

The movie comes out on DVD September 29th via Warner Premiere.

The guys from Toe Tag Pictures are back. Fred Vogel, the sick mastermind that brought us the August Underground trilogy (I'm ashamed to admit this but I've seen all 3) are back with a new flick filled with fake snuff, mock executions and "real footage" of deathiness.

Well this has got to be 10 years too late don't ya think?

Sorta like Faces of Death with some Mondo Cane-ness, from the reviews I've read, the kills look mega realistic. This is of course the slice and dice expertise from Toe Tag.

The plot is below.

The film revives an early 1990’s Internet clip show, Murder, which was notorious for streaming videos of actual killings. After gaining popularity, the infamous show was discovered by authorities and shut down forcing the host, Balan, into obscurity.

Over more than a decade in the shadows, the obsessed host continued to search for scenes of brutality that provoke a maelstrom of emotion. Balan has recently emerged from the darkness and is eager to show you his collection.

I met Vogel once during a Chiller convention and bought August Underground Mordum (a signed copy!) and he was rather chill as we talked about horror shit. Good times.

I also have watched their most recent non snuff movie Redsin Tower which was pretty horroficly adequate. But I'm glad their back to their old sicko, twisted shenanigans.

I'll probably have to order this pretty soon. Only sick bastards need apply.

You know what there's not enough horror movies of? Movies revolving around the infamous urban legend that is the snuff film. Oh sure we've had the Guinea Pig series, 8MM, the grindhouse SNUFF ripoff and even some documentaries about the existence of such a flick.

But nothing recent. Except now.

The Skeleton Crew takes a turn for the surreal mixing in reality horror with snuffy like aspects. Check out the plot or rama below.

“In the early 1970’s a remote mental institution next to the Russian border was shut down by the police. Before it was closed, Dr. Andersson made a series of snuff films using his patients. The doctor filmed all the murders in 8mm and started to call himself ‘The Auteur.’ Thirty years later an American film crew arrives in Finland to shoot a horror movie about the massacre and are unaware that they are about to become the stars of their director’s real life snuff film. Instead of making a horror film, they are in one. The Auteur is slaying the Skeleton Crew one by one…

Snuff: A theoretical genre that depicts the death or murder of a person or people without the aid of special effects for the purpose of distribution and entertainment.

Ever since I watched Guinea Pig: Devil's Experiment which people thought was an actual snuff film, you always have to wonder if such a thing really exists.

I did watch the pseudo snuff film: Snuff and that was laughable but I guess it wasn't back in the 70s.

I mean even Charlie Sheen thought he was seeing snuff when he's saw Devil's Experiment.

8MM and Thesis are movies that have a snuff related plots. But most people are squeamish when they talk about the pornography of violence.

So its interesting when filmmakers make a documentary about the subject. One of these such docs is called Snuff: A Documentary About Killing On Camera.

I've recently started reading Chuck Palahniuk's new book Snuff. The infamous author of Fight Club, Diary and new soon to be released made into a movie Choke, has come out thrusting at full speed in this new book. I mean it was inevitable he'd write about this subject. C'mon, you knew he'd write about porn at some point didn't ya?

Cassie Wright, porn priestess, intends to cap her legendary career by breaking the world record for serial fornication porn movies. On camera. With six hundred men. Snuff unfolds through the perspectives of Mr. 72, Mr. 137, Mr. 600, and Wright's personal assistant, Sheila. With his satirical narrative and thorough research, Chuck Palahniuk reveals through these four characters the little-known facts and histories of not only pornography and sexual deviance, but also acting and life in and out of the spotlight, and throughout the novel shows the rarely acknowledged presence of pornography in modern America.

What's more clever are the fake movie trailers of Cassie Wright promoting the new book. Really funny play on some holly-porn movies.

The jaded viewer has always tried to introduce flicks you've never heard of. We've dug up movies from the bowels of underground horror.

The snuff sub genre is on the fringe on the edge of sicko-core.

Movies in this category are slim.

Fred Vogel's August Underground comes to mind first. The Guinea Pig "Devil's Experiment" is another.

But a new kid is on the block.

Shane Ryan's Amateur Porn Star Killer and its just released sequel are now the new disturbing fucked up flicks that have added their names to the fringiest of the fringe.

Rewind the Insanity:

OK. It's pseudo snuff. But with porn.

I haven't seen this shit myself, but many have and from the bytes in the trailer they are all now viewers who have been mentally disturbed.

Pseudo snuff flicks are never any good. They make you sick, dirty and disturb the FRAK out of you, but are not actually good movies.

But alas, you watch because if these movies make a mental horror impact, the director's done their job.

So be aghast and watch the trailers.
